Liberstad, the Norwegian “private city” will exclusively use cryptocurrency

Liberstad, a project founded by two partners: John Holmesland and Sondre Bjellås is a paradise-to-be for libertarians and anarcho-capitalists. Founded in 2017, the settlement is actually a 370-acre piece of land. The location of land in question is in Southern Norway in the Marnardal municipality. Over the last two years, the place has seen a large number of like-minded individuals from all over the World show interest in it. Libertarians hope that the place will form into a fully functioning settlement complete with all the amenities of a regular one.

A private settlement aiming to become independent

The Norwegian gaming resource reports that the founders created the place in hopes of building a functioning commune of people with similar views. They were also inspired by Atlantic Station, another libertarian project located in the United States in Atlanta, Georgia.

Liberstad aims to be an independent legal entity. Some lawmakers and a part of the population dismiss those wishes entirely. They say that while the place might attract some settlers, complete implementation of the project is an impossible task. The founders disagree. They don’t think that the idea of the city is utopian nonsense. They view it as an already established business model that they can implement. The partners negotiated with local authorities for some time in order to obtain the rights to ownership of the agricultural piece of land. In the end, the government complied and today the project is in on its way to realization. (follow this link to read the announcement in local language)

The city with its own currency

If living in such a place interests you, Liberstad is already ready to sell you a plot. You can buy land in city-to-be and pay for it using 27 different cryptocurrencies. However, their latest move saw the founders create and announce the official cryptocurrency of the settlement. The currency is City Coin (CITY). Blockchain company City Chain created the token exclusively for the settlement. Norway’s private smart city plans to use the currency as an exclusive means of exchange within the community. With the coin, people in Liberstad will be able to pay for any number of services and things. The usability of the coin will be anything ranging from food, insurance, land, transportation or doctor’s services.

The founders hope to start accepting the first settlers by the year 2020. They don’t have particularly strict requirements for the new citizens of Liberstad. John and Sondre just hope to gradually build a community based on the principles of non-aggression and private property rights. They pay no attention to naysayers and continue to work on bringing their idea to fruition. The partners plan on eventually implementing all of the amenities you would find in a regular city in theirs. They want to create a functioning police force, fire department, sewage systems, and an independent water supply.

City Coin will be the only currency in circulation in Liberstad. The coin is based on the Smart City blockchain-fueled platform developed by the company. The platform will house a multitude of services and functions needed for the settlement. Settlers will communicate, vote on issues and shop for services on the platform. The press release made by the company stated that whereas cities are currently forced to rely on public services operated by the government City Chain will give existing and emerging places like Liberstad the opportunity to build and offer services on a private and voluntary basis.
